![]() Quick Example (not my view on every politician out there): “All you can do with those politicians is handing them out an Armutszeugnis - they don´t have any clear strategy and aren´t even helpful to their supporters” But there is an idiom: “Ein Armutszeugnis ausstellen” (Giving someone a certificate for his/her poverty" My post is more about the word Armutszeugnis, because it works in endless constellations. Nowadays we use the word to display poor behaviour (not poverty on a monetary level but poverty on a more social or spiritual level) in which we see a negative impact on those suffering from the consequences.Įxample: “Grown up tough guys beating up little kids is really an Armutszeugnis.” But to get the free help, you needed an official piece of paper, confirming you were indeed “poor”. The state provided the extremely poor with food marks for example. I don´t know too much about the origin, but it´s more than just a metaphore cause it really existed in the after war era(s). ![]() ![]() But theoretically it can be anything from homeless people to parents beating their children to species extinction to war crimes and so on. Often referring to society as a whole in consequence. In germany we sometimes say - if someone does something really bad/despicable/immoral - this is an “Armutszeugnis” (like a certificate for poor decisions or mindset) as proof that something´s wrong.
